Health

I have a very sore throat. Hopefully not strep. Will see the doc tomorrow if I'm not spectacularly better.

Punky is back to her old self. We've found the best dosage of her meds, so she doesn't have any visible side-effects. She is active, talkative and grouchy, just as usual. She eats and drinks plenty and uses her litterbox again. We're not kidding ourselves, she's still very ill. But she looks comfortable now, which is more than we could ask for.

Music

Oh dear, it's the first of the month and I'm about to spend a hefty sum of money on records. Artoffact will be the end of me. They have issued 3 of the best Haujobb albums on vinyl, and of course the limited editions are the prettiest. So, I know where my money from next Wednesday, working at the fabric store, will go. ><

Listened to tons of Schwefelgelb (concert on Saturdayyyy), Haujobb, Kite, Foals, ESA, Essaie Pas...

Health

I'm coming down with a cold. I'm a wreck this morning. I'm also sore from PT yesterday, which would be fine in normal condition, but adds an extra layer of hell today. Mood is good though.

Kitty is doing fine. Her meds seem to be helping. She is her regular old self now. It took a little while to adjust doses so she wouldn't be sick, but I think we're getting the hang of it.

Music

Lost of Schwefelgelb, and we listened to Mlada Fronta and Cervello Elettronico while playing Netrunner. I really love this game! We had lots of fun (and I won both games, haha :P)

Watching

I finally watched Ex Machina. I was wary at first, when the trailer came out, because I don't exactly trust Alex Garland when it comes to the treatment of women, but good friends told me I was missing out and managed to change my mind.

Well, for starters, it is obviously gorgeous. Not just Ava's design, but the whole photography. It is sleek and hazy at the same time, which is fitting for a movie centered on the objectification of women.

Interesting, albeit not revolutionary, things are said about AIs. It's particularly relevant after the Tay fiasco. Vague spoilers ahead:

I'm glad Domnhall Gleeson did TFA, because he was getting close to being pigeonholed as a self-centered douchecanoe (thinking of Frank in particular, where he plays wonderfully the Good Guy™). As the movie unfolds, his character appears like an even worse person than Nathan, who is unabashedly using AIs for his own personal gratification. Caleb doesn't even consider the possibility that Ava might have agency, all the while posturing as his protector/friend/saviour. And I personally prefer assholes who know and do not hide what they are. Intentions aren't magical and all that.

Anyway, good plot, not revolutionary, but makes you think, and very enjoyable. (A teeny weeny bit of gore, let me know if you need CW)

Health

Pretty wiped after two evenings out in 3 days. Headachy too. Blah! Nothing big, but I hope I can shake it off soon.

Concert

Clémentine and I went to see Liste Noire on Saturday night. They were very good. The vocalist is super talented! His stage presence and vocal range remind me a little of Brian Molko. I took some pictures of the evening (including the shows from Katzkab and Bootblacks)

Bootblacks

Liste Noire

Go see the full album here

I'm now daring to request invitations to concerts as a photographer (so I have more money to drink, oops), and a journalist approached me at Essaie Pas and asked if she could use my pictures to go along an interview.

Photography

Speaking of interview, I answered a few questions for Michael's A Darker Figure newsletter. We're talking music, books, my self-portrait project and disability.

Music

Yesterday we listened to the Mine LP (it's a bit different from the digital file and it feels like I'm rediscovering it, which is wonderful).

Then I listened to the new Schwefelgelb (I seriously can't wait to see them live!!), Cygnets and Seabound.

Watching

Still binging on horror movies (hey, guess what? I had already seen Spoorloos too lol). I really loved The Babadook. It plays with classic horror tropes and adds subtle and interesting twists. The use of music and sound effect is particularly clever. It does a good job building anxiety on mundane things and remains deeply anchored in reality. It's a beautiful exploration of grief and letting go and the cast is really brilliant.

I also watched The Taking Of Deborah Logan last night. So creepy! Creepy old people are a nice change from creepy kids. It is another found footage thing, with a twist since it revolves around Alzheimer's. Maybe a tad too long, I enjoyed the first part a whole lot better than the second part (which reminded me a little of The Descent, which I found very boring). Anyway, avoid if you're sensitive to the subjects of senility and mental decay, because it's pretty rough.

Health

I'm ok, a bit tired today. Math is in a lot of pain because of his lumbago though. I hope it goes away soon.

Concert

I had planned to go to a concert near home in the evening with Clémentine but both of us procrastinated on ticket buying, so it was sold out in the morning! I managed to find a reseller for one ticket and to get myself invited as a photographer by someone from the label, so phew! All good. I was really looking forward to going out as it had been a while, even though I had tried listening to the main act on Bandcamp and wasn't exactly wowed. Turns out it was really cool live. I managed to take photos I'm happy with by only shooting the first 2-3 songs and danced like crazy, especially during Essaie Pas.

Health

I had a pretty tough session with the PT and it went very well! I was quite sleep-deprived and lo and behold, I felt stronger than I've ever been this year. No soreness today either!

Music

I received my Storming The Base order so we played the ∆AIMON, Seeming and Volt 9000 records, then listened to The KVB. I put Schwefelgelb for Clémentine and she liked it so we're going to the concert together. :3

Watching

Clémentine came over for Vietnamese food and the Fringe rewatch. We finished season 3. I had forgotten so much!

Reading

I'm reading The Demolished Man by Alfred Bester. I listened to Haujobb's Ninetynine while reading in bed and had a good night's sleep, which made up for the insomnia from the night before. :)

melle_chantilly: (Default)
Crafting

Hah, yesterday I tried making up a dress with a big piece of sheer fabric and it turned out pretty crappy. I haven't cut much, so I'll rip it apart and try again another time. But if I'm still sewing on a regular basis at the end of the year, getting a mannequin to my measures would probably help a lot.

Music

Listened to The KVB, The Present Moment, Hante., ASG, Kite, Schwefelgelb, Radical G, the Architect • Sonic Area • Hologram_ album, and ended up listening to Mechanical Animals by Marilyn Manson, which I still love dearly.

Watching

I was trying to get Spoorloos to download but it was taking ages, so I watched Sinister. Turned out I had seen it already (and forgot about everything). It's a pretty good movie, although it's a jump-scare fest. I don't mind them, but they're especially cheap in that movie.

Spoorloos has arrived so I'm going to watch it now. :)

Health

Meh, having a sick kitty at home is taking its toll, even though she's doing better now. Math is pretty depressed and blah, and I am too, in my own way, which means my anxiety spiking all day and at night.

Out and about

Clémentine wasn't feeling it, neither was I so the goth party will be for another time. I stayed in last night and we resumed our X-Files rewatch, which was nice.

Music

Woke up with Alphaville, then listened to The Present Moment, Lust For Youth, Minuit Machine, Memmaker, Youth Code, Cervello Elettronico, Blush Response and ASG. We sang at the top of our lungs while listening to Metanoia, it was good and cathartic.

Watching

I'm still unpacking my feelings regarding Mr. Robot. I don't know if I know anyone who's watched it? Spoiler: basically it feels like Fight Club without the toxic masculinity. Not very original but a few surprises and the cast is fantastic.

Health

I'm doing well these days. Got back to a healthy sleeping pattern, exercising with my PT, taking walks again (the canal is back to its normal self, yay!)

Concert

It's a bit slow atm but things are going to pick up real soon. I just found by accident that Schwefelgelb will be playing in Paris in less than a month!! If you don't know their music, you've at least probably heard me talking about them a million times. :D Next weekend there's Liste Noire (ex-Velvet Condom), then later, Pelican (which I'm not sure I'll be able to afford, and be arsed to go alone), Schwefel, Horrorist and Mlada Fronta on the same night at different venues (*sigh*), Psychic TV (!!!!!!!) and finally Jad Wio and Collection D'Arnell Andrea (hey, look I'm 16 again).

Out and about

Today is record store day and Math just got some bday money so we're going to tour the records day hehe (I'm expecting an order from Storming the Base and just got two amazing records delivered, so I'll have to be good!).

Yesterday I walked to Châtelet and popped by Lil Weasel to return a magazine I borrowed, and got offered one day of work next month at the fabric store. Yay! I had a little chat with the owner of the handmade soap and organic cosmetics store (through whom I got the job at the wine fair). Then I stopped by my hair salon to show off my regrowing hair and a few baldie pics to my hair stylist. :)

There's a goth party tonight and we're planning to go, Clémentine, Physalis and I. No idea what I'll wear. It's interesting because last time I went (15 years ago, yeah...) I was super-super feminine, lacy big skirts, waspie and tits on display, so now, I'm going to have to start afresh. :)

Music

I've been listening to Lust For Youth, Seabound, The Present Moment, Liste Noire, Hante. the new albums by Sølve, Blush Response and Youth Code and the new Ancient Methods split (I've received the limited edition with a screenprinted sleeve and blood print, love love love).

Watching

I'm in a horror movies mood and so is Clémentine, so we've watched some classic slashers together (Halloween, Friday the 13th). I also watched Noroi, which really creeped me out, and Behind The Mask: The Rise Of Leslie Vernon, which was a bit of a let-down.
melle_chantilly: (Jen)
It's interesting how the shaved head made me feel like wearing more feminine clothes again. I felt like wearing tights and a skirt the other day but turns out the only skirts I own that fit the bill (read: black and not too "girly") are SUPER short (I wear them with leggings). So I decided to make one. I looked for a suitable pattern but since I couldn't find one, I decided to design my own! And voilà!

I used remnants of the fabric i used to make these trousers. It's a medium thickness, dark grey jeans with a little stretch.

I used this recipe to make my own pencil skirt sloper, cut three pieces (two fronts), assembled and pinned it until I found a shape I liked.

I am pretty proud of my zip insertion. I had planned on using silver coloured zip and buckle but they didn't have any that I loved at the haberdashers.

The buckle strap is a bit crappy looking upclose but no one is going to go there. :D

I used tartan bias to finish the hem edges and sewed the hem by hand. I also added pockets! I toyed with the idea of back welt pockets but they aren't that practical so I don't think I'll bother.
melle_chantilly: (Jen)
Health

I've been exhausted these past couple days. I don't know if it's my thyroid going down again but ugh. I try to go out, still, because walking helps if I don't overdo it. I was supposed to go out yesterday and the day before but I was too weak. Nothing big that I'm sad missing though.

Music

Well, we finally bought a turntable. I started buying an LP here and there because I liked the objects or because I wanted to send extra money to the bands (I think I bought Blendwerk 3 times?). Then I remember reading an article about the best prog rock albums (on Rolling Stones I think) and seeing all the artwork brought me back to my childhood and the hours spent daydreaming in front of these. I fall out of love with CDs a long time ago (they're fragile, I loathe these bloody jewel cases, and the medium itself not very reliable and durable, turns out). And so, slowly the idea grew in me and it appears I really enjoy playing records.

So yeah, down the rabbit hole I go. I ordered two more albums yesterday morning with my first coffee and have 5 more in a basket on the Storming The Base website. The good thing is it's going to be a little easier to figure out what to get Math for special occasions (we both have wishlists, here's his and mine). ;)

I've been listening to Blendwerk and Night Falls a lot, but also ∆AIMON and the preview tracks of the upcoming Sølve album (can't wait!), Mr. KItty, 3TEETH and Sonic Area. I'm finishing up a mixtape at the moment, featuring these and more.

Health

I don't know how it speaks to my health (lol) but I shaved my head! I've wanted to do it for a while now. I'm happy with it! The feeling is very nice. I expected it to look terrible but I think it suits me okay. I can't really judge as I can't stand my face but my head is relatively smooth and symmetrical.

Photography

Yes, of course, I took many pictures, including a proper self-portrait session this morning.

The rest is here (boobies).

Music

Last.fm isn't scrobbling at all today. :_(

Yesterday I listened to Blac Kolor, DSX, Celldöd, Ancient Methods, Codex Empire, Haujobb and Dead When I Found Her.

Reading

I started re-reading Crash last night. I badly want to buy the next issues of all the comics series I've started reading but it will have to wait until next month. :)

melle_chantilly: (hood)
Concert

Here are my photos of The KVB concert (link to the whole album).

The KVB

It was again quite tricky to shoot (because the lights were very dim, but mostly because the venue was packed and it isn't easy to get a good shot from anywhere but in front of the stage there). I'm quite satisfied with the results, although I wish I had better photos of Kat.

The concert itself was very good. Great performance, great sound, super loud bass, which is far from being a problem, but thank dog for earplugs, because I was right in front of the loudspeaker when shooting (protip: people avoid standing there, so it's a good spot for shooting hehe). I wish I had been able to enjoy it more but I took photos for the most part. I still danced for a few songs (including a sepulchral "Sympathy For The Devil" cover during the encore).

Music

Listened to a lot of ∆AIMON, KVB and Velvet Condom.

Watching

I have just watched A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. I had discarded it because I feared it would be triggery, but not at all. And: female vampire eating the patriarchy, do I need to say more?

I loved it. First of all, the photography is breathtaking. The empty and silent city is a mesmerising setting for the story. It is a movie of few words. Characters are little more than quick sketches, but it leaves all the more room for emotion. Music plays an important part, and of course that's something I'm sensitive to.

It reminded me at times of Let The Right One In, but mostly made me want to rewatch Abel Ferrara's Addiction (I haven't seen it in 20 years so don't assume similarities further than the vampiric theme and the black & white image).

It isn't very gory (some scenes with blood and a finger cut off but you can see it coming and it isn't very realistic or nasty). The music can be quite loud during "horror" scenes but same, you can tell when it's coming (no jump scares).

Very mild spoilers with themes:

Animals: I was afraid for the cat a lot but nothing happens to him.

Coercion of a woman: a woman is pressured and physically forced to take heroin by a man she's keeping company to. It isn't too bad a scene in my opinion, but still worth mentioning.

Crafting

I made myself a water bottle cosy. It took me only two days. It is very effective in keeping the bottle warm (stayed warm for the whole movie!).

Concert

I went to The KVB last night, it was very good. Their show was impeccable, very moody and sexy. Dim lights (which makes the photographer in me sigh heavily). The opening band was okay-ish but had better lights in that regard!

I'll post the photos tomorrow. In the meantime, here are those from A Place To Bury Strangers.

A Place To Bury Strangers

A Place To Bury Strangers

The rest of the album is here.

Another very, very good concert. I must say I wasn't super familiar with them, as it isn't the music I generally enjoy listening to at home, but would rather experience live. The sound again was perfect (both La Maroquinerie and Le Petit Bain rarely disappoint). I half expected to be bored after some time with super long guitar noise songs but the concert actually went by very fast. The room was packed and the crowd lively. Blurry Mountain, the opening act, were also very good and complimented the APTBS show perfectly.

It was probably my most challenging concert shooting up to this day. The performers moved A LOT, and the lights were non existent for most of the show, excepted for two video projectors on each side of the stage. Which means no auto-focus (I'm very bad at manual focus. I blame my glasses, and I need to try getting daily contacts for that purpose, because I can't see properly in the viewfinder). So I rolled with it and allowed myself to shoot blurry images and tried to capture movement the best I could. In post production, I amped up the contrast and colour saturation, which is practically the polar opposite of what I've been doing so far. And I'm pretty happy with the result! Quite outside of my comfort zone. Jill gave me solid advice and I'm trying less to aim for photographic "perfection" and more to try and capture the moment.

Music

Yesterday, I listened to Gabi Delgado, HEALTH, Encephalon and BQA (while trying to keep my cool as I was wrestling with our dying washing machine, ugh).
melle_chantilly: (Jen)
Health

I went back to the physio yesterday and had a good exercise session. I'm pretty sore today and I missed the feeling. :)

I worked for two days last weekend at the Salon des Vignerons Indépendants in Paris. Selling wine, lifting boxes, 9 hours a day with no break at all. It was actually quite enjoyable and I'm recovering nicely (not to mention that I attended a concert on Monday night, oops).

Concert

A Place To Bury Strangers was stellar. I can't wait to show you the photos I took (tomorrow, most likely. I'm waiting for Jill to put them up on her blog).

I have acquired photo authorisations for Pelican and Velvet Condom next month as well.

Oh, and Clémentine and I have BOOKED OUR FLIGHT AND HOTEL FOR INFEST this August!!! My first festival! :D Trying to obtain a photo pass as well.

Music

Last.fm won't scrobble anymore so it's a pain to blog about music (I listen to so many things, I don't remember half of it). I'm listening to the preview of the upcoming SØLVE album (half of ∆AIMON). It's going to be a gorgeous release. Loving what I'm hearing.

I've listened to Velvet Condom, KVB, the new Memmaker, Iris... I've started listening to the bands that I don't know who will be performing at Infest too, Rroyce, Massive Ego... so far so good!

Watching

Math and I are still in the middle of our X-Files rewatch (with the aid of skippable). Clémentine also came over yesterday for our Fringe rewatch. We're at the beginning of season 3.

On my own, I'm watching Limitless, The Closer and The Office US in addition to the weekly stuff.

Crafting

I cast on a hot water bottle cosy with Cascade 220 leftovers yesterday. I'm already halfway through (it's like a giant sock so far!).
I'm also halfway through my third Viajante. Whoo!

Health

I'm doing fairly well. A bit tired, but only because I'm trying to shift back to my normal rhythm after almost two weeks of freestyle sleep in Ambierle. :)
I was freaking out a little bit these past few days because I am supposed to work this weekend and I couldn't reach the guy. I hate unplanned, uncertain things. It makes me so anxious. Anyway, we finally got in touch this morning and we're all good. So tomorrow and on Sunday I'm selling wine at the Salon des vignerons indépendants in Paris. Wish me luck!

Concert

I went to see Front Line Assembly last Sunday and, well, it wasn't good. They had major technical problems and Bleeb was beyond pissed. I still took some photos but it's tough taking good ones when noone is having a good time.

Music

I've been listening to a lot of IAMX, and to the new KVB, Of Desire. I'm seeing them live in a few days (no photos, just dancing).

Watching

Math and I started watching Mr. Robot (oh jeez, I get Styx stuck in my head each time the title crops up). I really like it so far!

Photography

Yesterday, I spent an hour taking photos of Lawbenstriel. We had a lovely time and I'm very happy with the outcome. :)

Crafting

I've started sewing another pair of pyjamas, in a bright and colourful Kokka fabric. The shorts are done (I struggled getting my brain to get into "French seam mode" so it took a lot longer than it should have).

I've remade for [personal profile] anatsuno  the jacket I made myself after the holidays using the pattern for a cardigan in a Japanese book. It feels so good to have finished a sewing project! :)

The main fabric is a thick wool/synthetic blend (quite similar to the one I used myself) and the sleeves are cut from a woolly jersey (two layers since it was a little thin).

I'm better today. :) Math and I are working things out, he's the best, really. The constant mood swings are exhausting though.

Concert

I'm shooting Front Line Assembly on Sunday. I'm seeing Bleeb pictures crop up on Twitter from other European shows. Can't wait!

Music

Hey, look at that, I'm trying to listen to music that actually makes me feel good. I fell asleep to Tiamat last night. I woke up with Kite stuck in my head but listened to Roterstand, then Haujobb and Schwefelgelb.

Photography

We went for a quick car ride and I took photography of the countryside. The sky was nice. :) This is going to sound very goth but I don't think I've ever taken photos of the daylight outside before. I was at loss with the camera settings for a while.

Well, today has been shit. My mood is most unstable. I'm grateful for my wonderful friends who support me no matter what (Math is among those friends, I'm glad I can tell him everything).
I'm feeling terrible, and sorry about myself again. My mind is racing, I have so many questions, and I can't seem to find a good balance in life.

I also just got a message from one of my uncle about my paternal grandfather's succession/inheritance. I wasn't close to him at all and his last years were another excuse my mother took to make herself the martyr. I just don't know if I'll have the energy to deal with it at all.

Music

Listening to lots of Mr. Kitty, The Klinik, MIAB and RadicalG.

melle_chantilly: (Chantilly)
Health

I'm well. Beginning of the week was a bit tough, I did a lot of soul searching, as I am wont to do in Ambierle. I've been reading a lot about ADHD and it was quite illuminating, in particular regarding my sex life. I did the Jasper/Goldberg test and had a 91 (when ADHD is over 70). I'll bring it up to my GP, although if she confirms the diagnosis, I am not really looking for medication. I think I've learnt and am still learning to handle my overactive brain (less anger, better management of the constant stream of parasitic thoughts with music). I feels good to allow myself to think it's not that I'm not making an effort or being whimsical, but that my life-long issues have a root cause and "just" need to be managed.

I found this article about submission pretty accurate and it is interesting to put in perspective with ADHD overstimulation.

Music

I've been listening to tons of Schwefelgelb and Kite, and also S'apex, Rotersand, Hecq, Teeth Of The Sea, Blac Kolor...

Watching

We watched Attack The Block a few days ago. It was pretty good and John Boyega is just adorable! We also caught up on Elementary, HTGAWM and Brooklyn Nine Nine.

Photography

I took a few nude self-portraits in the bedroom one evening. I'd like to take some in the morning but so far I haven't been very courageous upon waking up. ^^

Crafting

I started remaking the weird bubble jacket for [personal profile] anatsuno , in some tartan wool. It's coming out pretty neat so far.

Health

I'm well. Doing many long walks. I'm leaving, probably on Monday, with [personal profile] anatsuno  for a few days in the countryside. I'll be back in Paris on the 11th before the FLA concert.

Last night, for the second night in a row, the upstairs neighbour had a party (probably because it's the holidays so they probably stashed their kid with the grandparents). Loud, frathouse style (we could hear "chug, chug, chug" every few minutes. But as I'm not chronically sleep deprived anymore and not as hypersensitive as I used to be since my fibro is in check, I could laugh it out instead of having a bad anxiety spike. Tbh I'm lucky they tolerate my music all day (they know they're welcome to tell me to turn it down). So it's only fair.

Out and about

anatsuno had an appointment at our hairdresser so I came along, after we had lunch with Clémentine at a lovely Thai place nearby. Then I walked home from the city centre.

Then we went to a lovely restaurant with Math for our 10 years anniversary. <3 Time flies, it's amazing. I'm the luckiest woman on earth. Our connection gives me so much strength.

Music

I listened to a lot of Kite, HEALTH, Horrorist and Schwefelgelb, also DAF and Adam Freeland.

Watching

I watched Starry Eyes a couple of days ago. It was okay (copy pasting what I posted on FB because I'm very lazy). The first hour was pretty good. Big nod to Zulawski (RIP), and to Possession in particular (which is a personal favourite). The cast is pretty good.

TW for a bit of everything: sexual assault (not very graphic, I handled it no problem, if that helps. I actually thought it was hot, but that's not a good gauge heh), strobes, self-harm, substance abuse). Also, avoid if you have a strong issue with nail things.

Good bits about power play, which was my main reason for wanting to watch it. The ending was extremely disappointing though.

Spoiler-ish: it turns into a basic slasher (very graphic though but gore scenes are easy to avoid. Don't look when she picks up the dumbbell) and the very end is a letdown altogether (with a gratuitous lesbian kiss, sure why not). /spoilers

I'm taking recs for other horror movies (no horror porn please). I'm in the mood!
