Music
Woke up to ∆Aimon – Flatliner (and to a migraine – unrelated). Then I read an old Idie:youdie review of Covenant's Northern Light, so I listened to some of that, and more Covenant.
Math needed some beat to get coding so I put some Monolith on, then ESA, and Mentallo, and we had lunch while listening to Chris & Cosey.
In the meantime, I received 3 mixtapes from friends! So after lunch I listened to the one from Flo, with songs from One Direction, Taylor Swift and Little Mix. I have to say that I live in a cave, in the sense that I don't have a tv and don't listen to the radio, so I had never heard any of this before, even though I was pretty familiar with their names (and their faces because fandom friends and stuff). So it was great to get to know them. I might listen to a lot of hard niche stuff at the moment but I like pop music as well. A lot of the electronic music I listen to is very connected to trance, house or disco, I really don't believe in the divide of pop versus indie or whatever. Music is just music. And anyway, I think I have a lot more in common with a One Direction fan than with someone who listen exclusively to Funker Vogt, Sucide Commando and Combichrist.
So yeah, listening to it was nice, quite energizing (I was in a post migraine semi-comatose state), also quite educative, and interesting in terms of getting to know what makes me click and what doesnt.
I enjoyed Little Mix, in the same way I enjoy Beyonce or good Britney and indeed it was the right time for it. But OneD didn't really work for me, beside the catchy tunes. I thought about it quite a bit, and chatted with Flo on twitter and I came to understand that I generally do not really enjoy happy songs about falling in love, especially when the singer seems to address his listener a lot. OneD sure throws a lot of “you”s all the time and I don't really feel the “baby I wan to be with you gurl” vibe. “No Control” was in that matter a bit different so I liked it better and I could somewhat connect to the music.
I don't especially like depressing music, but I am interested by other emotions than happiness I guess. There's a wide range, it isn't even a scale. And it really depends of the moment. Recently I've been listening to music almost all the time I'm awake, so I pick one album after the other and think of the mood I'm in and what would be best suited each time I do (it can be exhausting, yes). And while I don't listen to “happy songs”, I do feel elation and happiness listening to music, very often.
So, back to the mixtape: after OneD came Taylor Swift, which was nice but didn't touch me particularly. I didn't find the songs as engaging as the Little Mix ones.
I then listened to the Youth Code LP. The production is... a bit bare (especially after listening to Taylor Swift). I heard the band saying they had a hard time themselve listening to it now, after recording their new EP, yeah, no shit. It's still amazing, though. Can't wait for the next album!
Then Blush Response, Carpenter Brut III, Iszoloscope – The Audient Void, some Displacer...
Watching
I watched Single White Female, which I had never seen. I was afraid it would be triggery but it was ok (ymmv, there are two assault scenes in it, one man on woman, and one woman on man, so...). The movie was very good. I just woke up and remembered this unfinished entry, so I'm even less articulate than usual. There's a funny bit with some Front 242 played on TV (which is probably why the movie came back on my radar recently).
